05/08/2010 - What A Ride!!
Teenagers James Catley-Day and Will Harvey are back home celebrating their successful 984 mile Lands End to John O’Groats charity cycle ride in eight days – two days less than their original target.
Sponsored by Candlelight Homecare and other local companies to cover some of the costs of the trip, the boys have raised well in excess of £2,000 for Somerset-based Mendip Community Transport for a new bus to be used by elderly, frail and disabled people and money is still coming in.
James and his close friend Will Harvey, from Bourton, who are both 18, hit on the idea of the sponsored ride when they were chatting in the school library. They trained for their marathon ride by cycling up to 200 miles a week.
James, who lives in Kingweston, near Somerton, has close links with the elderly and infirm as his mother is a co-founder of Glastonbury-based Candlelight Homecare Services.
Back home in Somerset, this week, James said: “It was an amazing experience. Scotland and the scenery was brilliant. We met so many nice people and they couldn’t have been more friendly. They dropped their accommodation prices for us and were so helpful. It was mentally as well as physically exhausting but I’d certainly do it all again.”
They are now enjoying their time off school. James is working in a factory while Will is working in a pub. They would both like to thank all the companies who made it possible for them to undertake this challenge:

Mendip Community Transport was set up 20 years ago under the auspices of Voluntary Action Mendip. It, is a not for profit transport provider which operates vehicles for community groups, the disabled, elderly, frail, the blind, mobility-impaired and similar disadvantaged groups or individuals living in the Mendip area. Operating from the Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallett, it has about 18 vehicles but still the demand for the service is outstripping supply.
